Selecting two opposite edges produces gables on both ends. Selecting one edge produces a gable on that side. For example, selecting just a face produces a hip roof that slopes in all directions. Depending on the edges you select, you can create different roof forms. To use Instant Roof, you need to select a face and choose Extensions > Instant Roof > Make Roof.
